Regina Resnik celebrated the 50th year of her illustrious operatic career in 1992. She has performed eighty different roles, both as soprano and mezzo-soprano. After a sensational operatic debut at age 18 in New York, she spent over four decades from 1944 through 1985 as a regular performer with the Metropolitan Opera, as well as at Covent Garden in London and with the Vienna State Opera. Audiences that witnessed her "Carmen," Klytemnestra," "Pique Dame," or "Mistress Quickly" understood her versatility as both tragedienne and comedienne. All of her most famous roles have been recorded; and together with her painter-husband, Arbit Blatas, as Production Designer, she has directed twelve major productions in opera houses from Warsaw, Lisbon, and Venice to San Francisco and Sydney. Her master classes for young singers are long-renowned in Salzburg, Toronto, New York, and San Francisco. She was nominated for a Tony award for her performance as Fraulein Schneider in the revival of Cabaret. Most recently she portrayed Mme. Armfeldt in A Little Night Music, which garnered her a drama Desk nomination in 1991 and which aired on PBS.
